North America

Culture and history

North America long remained a relatively empty country and underdeveloped land until 1500 CE. After that the continent began to receive great numbers of people from the Old World, primarily Europe and Africa.

In Canada the indigenous Indians were protected within reservations in the agriculturally rich area as the Montreal plain or peninsular Ontario. In Mexico racial admixture has gone much further of mixed Indian and white decent.

People and terrain

North America does not have the high settlement densities of Europe and Asia. However, the population continues to grow and is concentrated in regions of comparative advantage

The enormous expanses of the Canadian Shield and of mountainous terrain have discouraged continuous settlement. Canada's share of the total population is small and the tundra and boreal forest zones is almost devoid of inhabitants.
